What is Saint Patrick’s Day?

St. Patrick’s Day observes of the death of St. Patrick, the patron saint of Ireland. The holiday has evolved into a celebration of Irish culture with parades, special foods, music, dancing, drinking and a whole lot of green.

Did you know . . .?

  • The shamrock, a major symbol of St. Patrick’s Day and Ireland in general, is considered a sacred plant. According to tradition, its three leaves symbolize the Holy Trinity of Christian tradition.
  • While people in Ireland have celebrated St. Patrick since the 1600s, the tradition of a St. Patrick’s Day parade began in the U.S. and actually predates the founding of the United States.
