Nyepi

When is Nyepi?

March 3. It begins on 6 AM on March 3, and continues until 6 AM on March 4.

What is Nyepi?

Celebrated in Bali, Indonesia, this Hindu celebration is a day of fasting and meditation. Also called the “Day of Silence,” Nyepi celebrates the Balinese New Year. People are expected to focus on reflection, and thus, work, entertainment, and other things that interfere with self-reflection are prohibited (some people even refrain from talking).

Did you know . . . ?

Although Nyepi is a Balinese Hindu holiday, even tourists to Bali are expected to respect the local traditions on this day. They are free to do as they wish in the comfort of their hotels, but most tourist places are closed on Nyepi.
