Losar

When is Losar?

March 3 – March 4, 2022. The date each year is determined by astrologers based in Dharmsala, India.

What is Losar?

Losar is the Tibetan New Year celebration. It is observed by people who follow Tibetan Buddhism (primarily in Tibet, Bhutan, India, and Nepal). The celebration involves two parts: bidding farewell to the previous year, and welcoming in the New Year. In the days prior to the New Year, people prepare by cleaning the house. At night, people will light torches and firecrackers to scare off evil spirits. On New Year’s day and in the days immediately after, people pray, visit monasteries, and spend time with family and friends.

Did you know . . .?

On the eve of Losar, people may prepare dough balls. The dough balls are filled with different fillings and are given out. The filling is said to match the recipient’s personality. For instance, if someone finds coal in their dough ball, it means that they have a black heart!
