International Women’s Day

When is International Women’s Day?

International Women’s Day (IWD) is a global holiday celebrated annually on March 8 to commemorate the cultural, political, and socioeconomic achievements of women.

What is International Women’s Day?

International Women’s Day is a global day that celebrates achievements of women, but also the need for gender equality. This day has been observed since 1911, and it is observed in many countries around the world. The United Nations began celebrating this day in 1975. The idea for this day came out of a 1910 international conference in Denmark; Clara Zetkin proposed that every country celebrate a “Women’s Day” each year to advocate for women’s rights. Early IWDs coincided with labor movements, and focused on labor reform.
