Carnival

When is Carnival?

March 1, 2022 (although celebrations in some locations may begin earlier). Carnival falls before the start of Lent in Western Christian traditions, which typically follow the Gregorian calendar.

What is Carnival?

Carnival is a celebration that occurs just before the start of Lent in Western Christian traditions. Since Lent is a time of fasting and sacrifice, Carnival is a time of celebration and indulgence. In many places throughout the world (particularly in countries with Catholic populations), this time is celebrated with parades, costumes, and food. One of the most famous examples of a Carnival celebration is the Mardi Gras celebration in New Orleans, Louisiana, which features colorful parades and other festivities.

However, Mardi Gras is just one example of how Carnival is celebrated. In Brazil, for instance, there is an entire week of Carnival festivities, including many parades that feature acrobatics, music, and samba competitions. In parts of Germany, parades poke fun at political figures. The carnival celebrations in Venice, Italy, are known for their elaborate masks. The focus behind many of these celebrations is to let loose and have fun before the fasting period begins.

Did you know . . .?

Carnival comes from the Latin phrase carne vale – “without meat.” During Lent, many Christians abstain from meat, so Carnival represents a last opportunity to indulge before the 40-day Lenten period begins! On a similar vein, Mardi Gras is French for “Fat Tuesday” – referring to fatty foods that are off-limits during Lent (which, depending on the tradition, could include meat, cheese, butter, and cream).

King Cake is a Mardi Gras tradition. A small plastic doll is hidden in the cake, and whoever is served the lucky slice with the doll is said to have good luck in the year ahead. Learn how to make King Cake here.

In Germany, Pfannkuchen (or, depending on the region/dialect, Berliner or Kreppel) is a donut-type dessert that is commonly served during the Carnival period. Learn how to make this here.
