Hello Commodores!

I hope all of you are doing well post fall break as we get back in to the swing of things. I know the Wond’ry is firing on all cylinders and there are 1 or 2 interesting workshops every day!

It has been an interesting time for me the past 2 weeks. We are in our second mod (quarter) at business school and I am taking a couple of interesting classes. One of them is ‘Negotiations’ and the other one is ‘Ethics in business’. While, they may not sound interesting by name, they have made me think critically in how we work as individuals in the professional environment and whether that matches our goal of the kind of person we want to be.

The goal of our Negotiations class is to be part of several simulations where 2 or more of us negotiate to reach a result. Think haggling on prices and ramp it up by 1000! Each one of us wants to do extremely well, and it has been interesting to see the different strategies people have used to get their target. Some of them have been compromising and conflict averse, agreeing to a deal just to have to avoid conflict, even if the deal doesn’t represent their best interest. While some others, have resorted to lying or using the truth sparingly to send the wrong signals.

It made me think whether I have done that in any form of negotiation, even if it means haggling on prices in India. And if that is truly ethical? How important is it to be successful to you? Would you flat out lie to gain an upper hand, or would you remain 100% ethical even if it means not being successful. The fact that I am taking negotiations and ethics at the same time gives me a different perspective in every class. There is no right answer, what works for you may not work for someone else. But it has helped me find out a little more about myself and I thought it would be a great thing for every one of you out there to think about as well!

If you have views on this, come by to the Wond’ry and let’s talk about it! We might even have a session on it! You might want to run the session! Come by and let us try and arrange that! If not, and you just want to chill at a cool place, and talk to a bunch of awesome people, the Wond’ry is still a cool place, one that you should definitely check out!
