National Pan-Hellenic Council (NPHC)
THINGS TO KNOW IF YOU ARE CONSIDERING JOINING NPHC:
Undergraduate students who wish to affiliate with NPHC chapters must meet specific membership qualifications. These standards include academic achievement (2.5 – 3.0 GPA depending upon the organization), community service, and good character. Students who are on disciplinary probation are not eligible to participate in an intake process. First-Year students must also have completed a CommonVU Alcohol Session also known as Alcohol Social Responsibility Training. Such requirements are designed to promote the building of strong and effective chapters.
and (1) Alcohol & Social Responsibility Training Session offered
All students wishing to seek membership in an NPHC chapter MUST attend (1) Membership Intake Seminar by the Office of Greek Life before the appropriate deadline. Students must be present the ENTIRE duration of seminars and trainings in order to receive full credit. Any student that has not attended (1) Membership Intake Seminar by:
September 30, 2019 (if wanting to pursue membership in the Fall)
OR
January 31, 2020 (if wanting to pursue membership in the Spring)
will NOT be allowed to join a Fraternity or Sorority for that respective semester.
Intake Seminars must be done again every (2) years if membership is not obtained within that time span. Intake seminars only are valid for two years from the semester it is completed. (Ex. Intake seminar done in Fall 2017 will only be valid until the end of the Fall 2019.)
Additionally, Alcohol & Social Responsibility Training must be completed by new members after joining. More information on when these sesssions will be held will be given towards the start of the 2019-2020 academic year,
Each affiliate organization will implement it’s respective internationally sanctioned membership intake process. To learn more about NPHC organizations, interested students are encouraged to research their individual organization and chapter websites, follow organizations on social media, and attend various events hosted by NPHC organizations on campus.
The NPHC chapters on Vanderbilt’s campus have a history of almost three decades and seek to continue the traditions of excellence and involvement with campus life. The earliest any person can pursue membership in a NPHC organization would be the 2nd semester of their 1st year. Some organizations may require higher or additional qualifications that could delay the pursuit of membership (i.e. more credit hours, a certain GPA, or a certain amount of service hours). Thus, please feel free to visit organizational websites and learn of their requirements or talk to a member of the Vanderbilt chapter.
NPHC chapters will advertise their membership intake process through fliers labeled “Interest Meeting, Informational, Rush Tea or Meet N’ Greet”, which all students are welcome to attend to learn more about an organization or express interest. These fliers will always be posted no less than a week before said meeting.
You are encouraged to contact chapter representatives for more information. You may also contact Harold Brown, Coordinator for Greek Life regarding any questions.
