Stevenson Professor of Physics


The Haglund group designs, fabricates, characterizes and simulates the behavior of thin films, nanostructures and heterostructures of materials with compelling optical and electro-optical properties, notably zinc oxide, vanadium dioxide and noble metals. Our most recent work has concentrated on mapping the ultrafast insulator-to-metal phase transition of thin films, lithographically fabricated nanodisks and nanoislands of phase-changing vanadium dioxide; characterizing exciton-plasmon coupling and optical cavity reonances in zinc oxide nanowires and quantum wells; enhancing the second-and third-order nonlinear optical properties of metal nanostructures in Archimedean nanospirals and serrated nanogaps; and building ultrafast, switchable nanostructure arrays that use optical surface-plasmon resonances, plasmonically generated hot electrons and gold nanoantennas to both initiate and probe the insulator-to-metal transition in vanadium dioxide.
