Supplement to The Person You Mean to Be

This Supplement to The Person You Mean to Be helps individuals read a text on an unfamiliar topic and internalize relevant themes from the book. The Vanderbilt University English Language Center (ELC) created this supplement as part of our mission to address the professional, academic, and practical language needs of students who have a first language other than English. Our supplement includes:

  • reading strategies for building background knowledge, identifying cultural perspectives, previewing the text, skimming the text, and scanning the text
  • a content overview that explores skills for reading accuracy and comprehension, including sections about argumentative structure and identifying the author’s arguments
  • a guide to recognizing informal stylistic elements, cohesive devices, and author voice and tone
  • a guide for your reflection on your how your cultural, linguistic, and educational background can support your choices surrounding bias
