1-to-1 Speaking Consultations

The English Language Center (ELC) offers 1-to-1 Speaking Consultations (SC) that are designed to meet the speaking needs of Vanderbilt University students, faculty, and scholars who use English as an additional language. Employees of the Vanderbilt University Medical Center (VUMC) are not eligible for SC sessions.

Due to the varied cultural and linguistic backgrounds of the university’s students, faculty, and scholars, abilities and needs for accomplishing course speaking and writing requirements may vary significantly for those who speak English as an addtional language from those who speak English as a first language. To address these needs, the instructors and consultants at the ELC are well acquainted with typical speaking and writing styles of people who speak English as an additional language. Consultations are collaborations between clients and consultants and they provide constructive feedback to help speakers and writers develop strategies for success in the academic context.

Special Information

All ELC 1-to-1 Consultations are remote via WCONLINE or Zoom.

Please login to    WCONLINE    to start your appointment. If you and your consultant agree, you may switch over to Zoom.

Fall 2023 appointments will begin on September 5th.

Undergraduate, Graduate, and Professional students may schedule up to three (3) consultations per week.

Please note: speaking consultations are offered only during Fall and Spring semesters (closed during Fall Break, Thanksgiving Break, Winter Break, Spring Break, and Summer Break).

SC Appointments should be scheduled 24 hours in advance whenever possible. Any appointment requested after 11:59 pm for the next day will be rescheduled.

Before You Arrive

Students who plan to participate in these sessions are REQUIRED to read 1-to-1 Speaking Consultation Policies.

1-to-1 Speaking Consultation sessions focus on language issues in academic spoken English.
