Transitioning From GoReact to a New Tool

Effective Summer 2022, Vanderbilty University will no longer have an institutional license with GoReact. However, we continue to license many tools that can provide the same or similar functionality as GoReact. This guide will review some of the key functions of GoReact and suggest alternatives that can be used moving forward.

GoReact Functionality

GoReact provided three options of video-related assignments:

  1. StandardThe Standard assignment type is the most commonly used assignment type in GoReact. (Previously known as a Self-Submit activity.) Without any additional settings, this assignment type allows students to record or upload a standalone video and submit it for feedback. With additional settings, this assignment type can be configured to allow live review, group recordings, or presenter slides.
  2. StimulusStimulus assignments allow students to record a video response to a prompt video (or other media) that you select. The recorded response will then be synchronized to the stimulus media. This type is commonly used in interpreting and other language activities, for mock interviews, and other spontaneous, unrehearsed, prompt-oriented responses.
  3. Comment OnlyComment Only assignments allow participants to evaluate a video without recording their own video response. This assignment type is useful when students need to review a presentation/speech or anytime you want students to simply watch a video and provide feedback.

GoReact Standard Assignment – Use Perusall, Assignments, or Video Assignments (Bongo)

  • Scenario: A French instructor wants to assess students’ pronunciation and expression of the language. Students are asked to record or upload a video and submit it to her for feedback.
  • Solution: She creates a Bongo Video Assignment.. The students complete this assignment by recording a video of themselves saying the monologue. Afterwards, she and other classmates give feedback on the video directly.  

GoReact Stimulus Assignment – use Video Quiz (Kaltura)

  • Scenario: A Music instructor asks students to watch a performance video. He would like the video to pause at various points during the performance to answer questions and provide feedback.
  • Solution: He creates a Kaltura Video Quiz to put in questions or prompts at specific points during the video to allow students to leave feedback.

GoReact Comment Only Assignment – use Brightspace Discussions

  • Scenario: Students in a seminar are engaging in an open peer review process, and they are specifically reviewing video essays. After watching one of their peers videos, they are asked to provide written feedback.
  • Solution: They use Brightspace Discussions to share those video essays, and post comments and feedback in the discussion forums.
