Implementing Respondus Lockdown Browser for a Quiz

Respondus Lockdown Browser is an academic integrity tool with the ability to lock down the computer upon which students are taking a quiz. This tool can be used in many labs across campus, and can also be installed by students onto any computer running Windows 10, Windows 11, or MacOS. It can also be installed on Chromebooks and iPads.

Enabling Lockdown Browser

To enable Lockdown Browser for a specific quiz, navigate to the Quizzes tab in your course. From the tabs along the top of the page, choose Lockdown Browser.

From the list of quizzes in your course, find the one for which you’d like to enable this tool. Select the arrow to the left of the quiz name and choose Settings.

Select the option Require Respondus LockDown Browser for this exam to enable this tool. This will expand the window such that you can edit Advanced Settings if you see fit to do so.

Be sure to select Save + Close to save your changes.

Lockdown Browser Advanced Settings

While enabling Lockdown Browser, you will have the option to expand the Advanced Settings are for each quiz.

Doing so will present several additional options, as explained below:

  • Require LockDown Browser to view post-exam feedback and results: This setting requires students to review their quiz results within Lockdown Browser after the exam has been completed. To customize what students can and cannot see in their post-exam results, check out our guide on Quiz Results Displays
  • Lock students into the browser until exam is completed: This setting prevents students from closing the Lockdown Browser window until they’ve completed their quiz submission. This setting should not be used unless your quiz is being offered in a classroom setting.
  • Allow students to take this exam with an iPad: This setting allows students to install the Lockdown Browser application for iOS to take their quiz on an iPad.
  • Allow access to specific external web domains: This setting allows students to open specific websites or sets of websites during their Lockdown Browser quiz. Please note that, for students to gain access to these websites, you must include a direct link to each site in the quiz itself.
  • Enable Calculator on the toolbar: This setting enables a calculator for students to use during their quiz period. Either a Standard Calculator or a Scientific Calculator can be selected.
  • Enable Printing from the toolbar: This setting enables a print option in the Lockdown Browser. This is unlikely to be necessary for most quizzing circumstances.
