Ashley Brown – New Director for the Student Center for Social Justice and Identity

Posted by on Wednesday, January 13, 2021 in News Blurbs.

As many of you know, we conducted a search for our Director for the Student Center for Social Justice and Identity last fall. I am excited to announce that Ashley Brown has accepted the position and will begin at Vanderbilt on January 20, 2021!  This is such exciting news as I know Ashley will be a tremendous asset for our students and the work we do in Dean of Students.

Ashley comes to us from Georgia State where she worked in University Housing as the Assistant Director for Equity, Diversity and Inclusion.  Prior to Georgia State Ashley completed her Master of Arts, College Student Personnel at Bowling Green State University and anticipates completing her Doctor of Education, Student Affairs Leadership at the University of Georgia in May 2021.

Ashley comes to Vanderbilt with extensive experience in social justice education and student engagement.  While at Georgia State Ashley co-designed a year-long, EDI curriculum for professional staff that built knowledge, skills, and awareness around identities using the Cycle of Liberation.  She also created and facilitated social justice and cultural competency training for approximately 250 University Housing student staff during student staff training and 75 professional staff members during professional staff training.  She also developed, taught, and evaluated the Panther Ambassadors for a Culturally Competent Campus (PAC3) seminar, a 12-week seminar on cultural competency skills using the Intercultural Development Inventory (IDI), Intercultural Conflict Styles inventory, & student development theories.

Along with her extensive experience in University Housing that included the support of 1,100 residents, Ashley routinely collaborated on programming with key campus stakeholders, including the Multicultural Center, GSU Police Department, International Student Services, Department of Applied Linguistics & ESL, Office of the Dean of Students, & Athletics Department.  In addition, she administered the annual Residential Satisfaction Survey and was instrumental in a number of assessment efforts across the division.

We’re thrilled to have Ashley join our team and look forward to her engagement with you and our campus community very soon!

I’d also like to take this time to express my gratitude to Lauren McLean for helping throughout and Dwayne Elliott in his role as search chair.  This was an outstanding candidate pool and very thorough and organized search process.  Thank you!!!!

Best,

Clayton Arrington
