Office of Transition Programs Update

Posted by on Thursday, April 13, 2017 in News Blurbs.

With the end of the year approaching, we just wanted to give you a quick update about some exciting developments in our Office.

Transfer Programming

We are thrilled to announce we have selected 26 transfer students to serve as Transfer Student Leaders (TSLs) for the 2017-2018 academic year. These leaders will be instrumental in helping future transfer students transition to campus. They will also be the first cohort in our expanded programming for new transfer students.

This Fall we also created a Transfer Student Leader Executive Board comprised of five students to help guide our work for transfer students. Along with our GA, Cathy Marques, this group serves as the leadership and planning board for transfer programming on campus. As we start looking ahead to training and programming for next Fall, be on the lookout for opportunities for us to collaborate with your Office!

Programming for First-Generation Students

Our Office is launching First VU, a student-focused endeavor to support and celebrate first-generation students at Vanderbilt! In our efforts to support first-generation students, we have selected six Peer Advocates to serve as the leadership of First VU, a student organization on campus. The Peer Advocates are committed group of students dedicated to the success of their first-generation peers while also affirming the experiences of first-generation college students on campus. If you know of any first-generation students who would like to become more involved in this new student organization, please send them our way!

We are also in the early stages of planning a video campaign which will highlight the achievements of first-generation students here at Vanderbilt. If you identify as first-gen and would like to be involved, do not hesitate to reach out as we would love to feature first-generation faculty and staff members!

As we move forward and expand the footprint of our Office, we look forward to connecting with more DOS Partners to find ways to better serve our students. If we can be of any help to you all in your work with students, please count us in!
