News from CLIPS: IA&A and VU PETSA

Posted by on Thursday, August 1, 2013 in archives.

Two items of news from the CLIPS cluster:

First, Assistant Dean Tina Smith is working diligently to get the new Intercultural Affairs and Advocacy office launched. Grad assistant Kaylen Addison and temporary program coordinator Andrea Ramos-Lewis are working fast and furiously to keep up with their indefatigable leader, Dean Smith. The web site should be active by the start of school and the multicultural groups will have a well-organized storage unit in addition to a new support system from IA&A. (Editor’s note: the DOS News coordinator thanks IA&A for the empty moving boxes resulting from this process!)

Second, VU PETSA is on-line and available for students, faculty, and staff. This on-line educational module — Personal Empowerment Through Self Awareness — educates students about the types of power-based personal violence as well as relevant laws, policies, warning signs, and campus resources. This educational program is the result of broad collaboration across campus and we appreciate our campus partners. Look out for Wanda Swan and G.L. Black who have speaking parts in the video and the Provost, who does an excellent introduction!

The goal is to have all students, faculty and staff take a look at the module and inform themselves about campus resources, university policy, and state law. The module is available through OAK and incoming undergraduate students (1st year and transfer) have already been enrolled in that course. An identical module is available for others in the Vanderbilt Community. Here is the website:

MCWC Associate Director Kayce Matthews has done a masterful job of keeping the PETSA program and roll-out on track after Director Nora Spencer departed in May. We were able to keep our promise to have the module active by the time the housing packets were mailed and in time for the new students to do the module before coming to campus (along with the Alcohol EDU course).

The Parents and Family Office will encourage parents to log in and take the module. If you would like to self-enroll in PETSA, please go to this link and follow the instructions.
