Associating an Assignment with a Grade Item

Brightspace Content is Getting Upgraded

Beginning with the Fall 2027 semester, Brightspace courses will begin using the New Content Experience by default. Additionally, Instructors now have the ability to enable or disable the New Content Experience in their own courses ahead of the change in Fall 2027. For more information about this transition, see our New Content Experience Transition page.

When you create an Assignment in Brightspace, you can link it to the Grades tool. You can create a Grade Item for the assignment ahead of time in the Gradebook, or you can create the Grade Item when you create the assignment. We will cover both methods in this guide. To learn how to create a Grade Item within the Gradebook (Grades tool), click here.

Link an Assignment to a Grade Item that has already been created

While editing your Assignment, locate the area Grade Out of. Enter the point value for the assignment. To the right, select “Edit or Link to Existing” from the drop down menu.

A pop-up window will open. Select “Link to an Existing Grade Item” and select the item from a list of gradebook categories and grade items. Make a note of the point value displayed and be sure it matches that of your assignment. Click OK when you are finished.

Link an Assignment to a new Grade Item

While editing your Assignment, locate the area Grade Out of. Enter the point value for the assignment. To the right, select “Edit or Link to Existing” from the drop down menu.

Save your changes before existing the assignment edit screen.

A pop-up window will open. Select “Create and Link to a New Grade Item”. It will automatically mirror your assignment name and the point value. We suggest keeping the Grade Item and Assignment name identical. Choose a grade Category if you have set them up. You can also change the grade type or scheme, although this is uncommon. Typically these settings will remain at “Numeric” and “Default (Percentage). Click OK when finished.
