Vanderbilt Undergraduate Writing Awards

There are many writing awards for undergraduate students at Vanderbilt. Listed below are a handful of awards to which undergraduate students can apply for consideration.

College of Arts and Science, Peabody College, School of Engineering, and Blair School of Music

Henrietta Hickman Morgan Memorial Prize
Best piece of original writing by member of freshman class.

College of Arts and Science

History

Samuel T. McSeveny Award
Best research paper or essay in a freshman history seminar during preceding calendar year.

Paul K. Conkin Award
Best paper in U.S. History completed during the previous calendar year. Must have been completed for a Vanderbilt history course during calendar year.

Henry Lee Swint Award
Best research paper or essay in any field of history completed during the previous calendar year. Paper completed for a Vanderbilt history course during calendar year.

French and Italian

Jacqueline and Morris Wachs Essay Prize
Best essay submitted by an undergraduate in French and Italian. Separate awards for creative and essay submissions.

Women’s and Gender Studies

Susan Ford Wiltshire Essay Prize
Best undergraduate paper on topics concerning gender (written for any course or assignment at Vanderbilt.)
