Commodore Cup - Sustainability Challenge

As part of the sesquicentennial celebration, the Office of the Chancellor launched a grant program to support activities and projects that engage with the university’s history, look ahead to its future, and explore what makes Vanderbilt distinctive and unique, and the Wond’ry was awarded one of these grants to produce an innovation challenge, which led to the creation of the Commodore Cup. The 2023 theme this year is sustainability.

Program Information

As part of the sesquicentennial celebration, the Office of the Chancellor launched a grant program to support activities and projects that engage with the university’s history, look ahead to its future, and explore what makes Vanderbilt distinctive and unique, and the Wond'ry was awarded one of these grants to produce an innovation challenge encompassing the theme of Sustainability, which led to the creation of the Commodore Cup.

The Wond'ry team kicked off the Commodore Cup on September 7th, in partnership with the Division of Administration and Clearloop. At the kickoff, participants received an overview of the challenges and guidelines, and met with the partners, as well as the Wond'ry team, assisted them through the design process.

Design criteria and constraints to inform design were provided in the design guide at kick off for full details. Teams will had access to office hours, mentors and advisors to help them flesh out their design and refine their final submission. We also partnered with Dores Design and student designers helped to bring their ideas to life.

2023 1st Place Winners:

1st Place Transportation Category: Team EZ

1st Place Sustainability Dashboard Category: Team Motivation to Direct Action

Team EZ, (composed of 2nd-year Elizabeth Tucker and 2nd-year Emma Williams) took first place in the transportation category with their proposal to ‘Change the Infrastructure Before the Options’, which would comprise of a mandatory Vanderbilt staff/faculty education module to be completed at onboarding and flexible arrival and departure times for the transportation arrangements. Team Motivation to Direct Action, made up of 3rd-year Emily Qian, 2nd-year Layne Foeder, and 2nd-year master’s student Manda Li, took first place in the sustainability dashboard category for their interactive and colorful sustainability dashboard, which allows for clear breakdowns in any area the user might want to click and explore. Click here to read more about all of the winning teams.
