Instruction Guide: Tagging for Immersion Vanderbilt
Highlight opportunities to complete Immersion Vanderbilt that are built into the curriculum.
Frequently Asked Questions
Tagging a class means that students can find your class in YES by searching the attributes section for classes that fulfill a component of Immersion Vanderbilt.
No, tagging a class is optional. If you choose not to tag your class, you can still inform students that they may use it toward a component of Immersion Vanderbilt. Students who pass a tagged "experiential" class will automatically receive credit toward Immersion Vanderbilt.
The instructor of a tagged class serves as the experience or project mentor. There are no additional steps for those teaching classes tagged "experiential." Faculty instructors in culminating classes will sign off on the student’s project plan proposal and final project submission.
You do not have to require additional work of the student, nor do you have to provide extra mentorship beyond what you already offer to the class. You will, however, sign off on the project proposal and submission as with independent projects.
Tagging your class allows students to more easily identify experiential learning and culminating project options built into the curriculum.
There are three possible tags:
- Experiential- these are classes that provide students with hands-on, active learning opportunities where the student learns through the acts of doing and reflection. Classes that include direct or indirect community or civic engagement or methodological training for research or production are examples.
- Culminating- classes designated as "culminating" require students to integrate and apply their learning to the creation of a final project. Projects may include but are not limited to poster or substantive presentations, academic papers, artistic pieces, prototypes, and podcasts. These are usually advanced-level classes due to the high expectations of students.
- Experiential or Culminating with guidance- this tag is most applicable to classes that have a substantial amount of experiential learning activity and result in a culminating project. Students may use the class to fulfill either component of Immersion Vanderbilt depending on their needs and instructor guidance.
No. Students will automatically receive credit toward Immersion Vanderbilt if they pass a class tagged "experiential." This does not prevent the student from pursuing additional experiences or applying for funding.
No.
Students in tagged "experiential" classes do not have to submit any forms.
Those in "culminating" classes will need to submit the final project by the end of the semester if they intend to use it toward Immersion Vanderbilt.
Yes. To remove your class tag, contact amy.m.johnson@vanderbilt.edu
No, the tag does not change who is eligible to take the class, how it is assessed, or how it fits within the curriculum of the major, minor, or program.
Ideally, courses with multiple sections (ie. Senior Honors Thesis or Independent Study) will all have the same tag. It is recommended that the department chair or DUS be involved in determining how best to tag a course.
