This year’s symposium includes writer interviews to offer a glimpse into the writing process of our participants, both in regards to their selected pieces and their work more generally. Erin Haley, Class of 2021

In this interview, graduate writing consultant Erika Nelson talks with Erin Haley, author of ““The NFL and CTE: An Exploitation of Black Athletes”. They discuss the importance of outlining and why Erin prefers to write introductions and conclusions at the end of the writing process. Talking specifically about her paper, Erin shares what other football fans can do to increase awareness of racism embedded in the NFL.

Kathy Yuan, Class of 2020

In this interview, graduate writing consultant Nick Tippenhauer talks with Kathy Yuan, author of “Sociocultural Comparison of U.S. vs. French Eating Regimens:  A Modern Identity Crisis”. They discuss the importance of editing and choosing a topic. In terms of her specific piece, Kathy shares why she chose to focus on comparing cereal labels in France and the U.S. for her analysis.

In this interview, graduate writing consultant Nick Tippenhauer talks with Lauren Furman, author of “Wilt the Flowers, Devour the Bones”. They discuss how writing analytical papers differs from writing creative works, and Lauren shares why she chose to tell the story from a non-human perspective.
