The Vanderbilt University Band program is one of the largest and most diverse student activities at Vanderbilt University. The University Band program includes five performing ensembles with members hailing from all over. There are people from California all the way to Massachusetts. There is representation from all of the undergraduate schools with quite a diversity of majors from mechanical engineering to music education. The University Athletic Bands also involve students from other universities and colleges in the Metro Nashville area including David Lipscomb University, Belmont University, Trevecca Nazarene University, and Nashville Tech.
Students that have participated in the Spirit of Gold Marching Band have gone onto many diverse and successful careers in medicine, law, politics, education, research, engineering, and as officers in the United States Military. Notably, former United States Senator and Chairman of the Senate Committee on Health, Education, Labor and Pensions Lamar Alexander (who was also Governor of Tennessee) performed with the Spirit of Gold.
Vanderbilt University Bands are often in the center of campus life providing concerts at social gatherings, university activities, & athletic events. Whether it is the Marching Band performing during Halftime at a Commodore football game, the Basketball Band performing from the floor of Memorial Gymnasium, the Symphonic Wind Ensemble presenting a concert of feature works, or the University Concert Band showcasing their selected works, the Vanderbilt University Band program offers a wealth of opportunities both to the performer and the audience.
