Independent Study, Directed Study, and Directed Research

Undergraduate Students

Independent study, directed study, and directed research courses afford undergraduate students the opportunity to pursue–under the supervision of a faculty member–areas of inquiry and topics of interest not generally offered through approved courses in the curriculum.

These courses are categorized in the curriculum by course number.

  • Directed study courses are numbered in the range 3840-3849.
  • Independent study courses are numbered in the range 3850-3859.
  • Undergraduate research courses are numbered in the ranges 3860-3864 (on-campus research) and 3965-3869 (field research).

Students wishing to enroll in independent study, directed study, and directed research courses must obtain certain approvals to do so. A student proposing independent study, directed study, and directed research courses across schools must obtain approvals from both the student’s school and the school offering the course.

Specific policies governing the independent study, directed study, and directed research courses are defined at the school level. For more information, please see the Undergraduate Catalog.
