IRB and Ethics Statement

LAPOP adheres to the American Political Science Association (APSA)’s Principles and Guidance for Human Subjects Research , and to the American Association of Public Opinion Research (AAPOR)’s Code of Ethics.

All AmericasBarometer surveys are reviewed and authorized by Vanderbilt University’s Institutional Review Board (IRB). IRB applications and approval notices are available upon request.

AmericasBarometer survey respondents are provided with information about the study prior to consenting to participate. Consistent with norms for scientific survey research in the Latin America and Caribbean region, participants are not paid by LAPOP for their participation.

AmericasBarometer surveys are probabilistic and the samples are nationally representative. All non-institutionalized voting age residents are eligible to be recruited into the survey and the resulting sample reflects the diversity of that population.

AmericasBarometer survey data are made available to the research community to advance scientific knowledge regarding public opinion, political behavior, and democracy. The studies are not intended to differentially benefit or harm any particular group.

AmericasBarometer data are de-identified and LAPOP’s data user agreement specifically prohibits the use of the data for the investigation of specific individuals or organizations.
