BEN LANE, MS
data scientist

How did you get involved with data science?

My route was a little circuitous. I graduated from Davidson College with a degree in classical language back in 2012, but worked as a clinical research coordinator from 2012 – 2017. That piqued my interest in biomedical research, so I went back and completed an undergrad degree in mathematics from 2014 – 2016. I began graduate school for biostatistics at Vanderbilt in fall 2017, and in 2019 Director of Graduate Education, Jeffrey Blume, told me about the Data Science Institute he was helping put together. I liked the sound of the the diverse projects and unique collaborations, so I pivoted into Data Science and have been loving it since!

When you’re not at the DSI, what can we find you doing?

I live in East Nashville, so I make ample use of Shelby Bottoms and Stones River greenways for running and cycling. Being close to the greenway is one of the primary reasons I chose to live there. I also love partner dancing! My girlfriend is a professional ballroom dancer, and swing dancing on Broadway (or in the kitchen under quarantine) is also one of my favorite hobbies! Less actively, I also love to read and cook.

What show are you currently binge watching?

Nothing currently, but the last show I watched was the most recent season of Bosch on Amazon. I highly recommend it if you’re looking for a gritty cop show!

If you could travel anywhere (money not a factor), where would you go and why?

Easy – Mallorca, Spain. This island is one of the premier cycling destinations in the world. The scenery, the climate, the awesome climbs – it’s an international cycling mecca where many of the best international teams train.
