Ongoing Issues
Incorrect Course Data Feeds into Brightspace

Late December 18, 2025, an error occurred that affects how course data is sent into Brightspace. The Brightspace Support team is working with other departments to identify the cause of this error and put a fix into place. As of 11am on December 19, we have identified the following issues caused by this error:

  1. All 2025 Fall and 2026 Spring courses that were set to active (meaning visible to students), were set to inactive. This prevented students from being able to access these courses. As of 10am on December 19, all 2025 Fall courses have been set to active. If you are an instructor who does not want your course to be active, you can follow the steps in this guide to make your course inactive again. We are working to correct this overall issue and return all courses to their original active/inactive setting as soon as we can.

  2. As a result of this issue, all data feeds that come into Brightspace have been down since Thursday, December 18. This means new student enrollments, instructor assignments, and course changes are not being processed in Brightspace at this time. Once the data feeds are restored, this information will automatically update.

If you see any other issues or odd behavior from 2025 Fall or 2026 Spring courses, please contact the Brightspace Support team to let us know. Thank you for your patience while we work to resolve this issue.

Update – Tuesday, December 23 4:30pm – We have been able to remove all erroneous courses that were recreated after a course merger. We are still working to correct this wider issue. As of now the data feeds coming into Brightspace are still not working. Due to this issue, we are not able to complete any course merges at this time. Once the data feeds are connected again, we will be able to restart course merges. Additionally, the Brightspace Support team will be out of office during Winter Break, but we will return on Friday, January 2 and continue working on this then.

Update – Tuesday, December 23 – We are continuing to work with other departments and D2L to resolve this issue. There will be an update soon that will attempt to fix the ongoing issue of courses’ active/inactive status being incorrect. While this can always be controlled by Instructors, we are attempting to return all courses to the active status as it was before this error Thursday night. Once this update is done, we will post more updates here.

Update – Monday, December 22 – We are continuing to work with VUIT and PSI to resolve these issues. As part of these ongoing issues, we have paused all course merges. Once this issue is resolved, we will resume merging courses as requested by Instructors. We will continue to post updates here until the issue is resolved.

Anonymous Marking in Assignments can break if Automatic Zeros is enabled in the gradebook

If an Assignment is set up to have anonymous marking enabled, and the course gradebook is set to automatically score late assignments as a zero, then assignment submissions can become deanonymized if any student receives that automatic zero. The best workaround if this happens is to retrack feedback for any students who received a zero on an assignment with anonymous marking enabled or to disable the automatic zero gradebook setting completely before the assignment due date.

Unable to Add Questions to Surveys if Quizzes is Disabled in the Course

If the Quizzes tool is turned off in a course, users are unable to add questions to Surveys. This is a rare issue because Quizzes is available in courses by default, but D2L is aware of this issue and is working on a fix. The current workaround is to always leave the Quizzes tool enabled in a course.

Export/Import Grades Tool

Exporting and importing grades into Brightspace has proven to have some limitations. If you are experiencing problems with this tool or plan on using it, please contact us for help! One urgent issue to be aware of is the order of your students upon export. They are not always accurately alphabetized by last name. Please review the order of students before entering grades and importing back into Brightspace. Please view our guide on how to export and import grades here.

Formula Grade Items

There are glitches with the Formula option in grade items. Symbols are appearing/not appearing where they should when the formula is saved, causing incorrect calculations. It is suggested to use the Calculated tool instead. Please contact Brightspace Support for more help with setting up your gradebook.

January 2024

Some Kaltura videos housed in Brightspace courses were failing to load properly for playback. We worked with Kaltura and D2L to resolve this issue, and Kaltura videos appear to be displaying correctly again.
