Fitness Programs: Spring 2024

We offer a variety of fitness programs to learn new skills and get you started with your workouts. Registration is required.

Instructional Programs:

REGISTER

Level 1 Shotokan Karate

Shotokan karate, a traditional Japanese martial art, will be taught at the introductory level. Students will learn and practice karate stances, blocks, and movement.  The first kata (practice form) of Shotokan will be taught. Each session meets once a week for 6 weeks. As the semester progresses, introductory Level 1 students will be asked to attend Level 2 class when ready.

Level 2 Shotokan Karate

Take your Karate skills to the next level. This class continues progress made in Level 1 introductory class.  Students should be able to complete the first kata on their own. Students should have previous experience with karate and be able to perform basic stances, blocks and strikes. Interested students who have no prior martial arts experiences should attend level 1 class or contact the instructor (Dan Ayers at dan.ayers@vumc.org) to ask permission and be advised on registration.

Each session meets twice a week for 6 weeks.

Fitness Room Orientation

This is an opportunity for new users of the rec center to feel more comfortable using the equipment and knowing proper gym etiquette when using the facility. An orientation session does not provide any coaching on technique, nor offer a training plan, instead it provides basic education about how to use equipment and feel confident in our weight and fitness spaces.

 

This class meets for 1.5 hours.  Only sign up for one session, as all sessions are the same class.

Small Group Training: Intro to Weight Training

This class is for students and is geared toward beginner weightlifters. Small Group Training is a 5-week training program focusing on learning basic strength and conditioning exercises. You will meet with a certified personal trainer twice a week.

Join in the benefits of meeting friends and working out in a small group of individuals.  This 60-min small group training session is led by a personal trainer and will provide the attention and motivation needed to help you develop good exercise habits. The training session will focus on learning correct technique and proper form of strength exercises using various modes of resistance.

You will meet with the trainer twice a week on Thursdays at 5pm and Saturdays at 11 am. Each training session is 55 minutes in length. If you miss a session, there will be no makeup sessions with the trainer.

Fee: Students 5 wks. (10 sessions), $50/person

 

Advanced Weightlifting

One should have basic knowledge and be comfortable lifting weights to participate in this class. The class will teach you how to use the Power Room equipment and provide instruction on how to perform certain exercises. Such as squats, deadlifts and bench press exercises.  The classes are taught by Johnny Pryor, a Certified Personal Trainer and Fitness Instructor.

This class meets for 1.5 hours.  Only sign up for one session, as all sessions are the same class.
