Vanderbilt Health Insurance: Request Additional Financial Assistance

Vanderbilt degree-seeking students registered for four or more credit hours must have accident/sickness insurance coverage. This coverage must be in the form of one of the following

  1. Family, individual, or parent’s policy is comparable to SHIP. To compare your current plan benefits with those offered by the Vanderbilt student health insurance plan, please click here.

  2. The Student Health Insurance Plan (SHIP) is managed by Academic Health Plans (AHP) and underwritten by Aetna.

Request Additional Financial Assistance

Student requests are evaluated on a case-by-case basis. To be considered for additional assistance for the cost of the VU SHIP, the student must be eligible for a Federal Pell Grant or have extenuating circumstances.

Option 1: If you have any health insurance plan, please complete the online Vanderbilt Health Insurance waiver request.

  • Go to https://vanderbilt.myahpcare.com/waiver.
  • If your insurance meets the requirements set by AHP and you successfully waive the Student Health Insurance Plan, you are not eligible to receive additional financial assistance for the Vanderbilt Health Insurance. No further action is necessary.
  • If you receive an email that states you are not eligible to waive SHIP, print or save the page for documentation to provide to the Office of Student Financial Aid and Scholarships. Continue to the request form.

Option 2: You are not eligible to waive the VU SHIP because you do not have any health insurance.

  • Complete the request form and provide a statement of circumstances regarding why you can’t waive the VU SHIP.
