Writing Studio News & Notes – Faculty Edition

September has been a busy month for us here at the Writing Studio. Since the beginning of the semester, our writing consultants (pictured below) have held nearly 800 writing consultations. Keep sending your students our way!

We also welcomed a new team member: In mid-September Lucy Kim joined our staff as our newest Academic Support Coordinator after graduating from Vanderbilt with her PhD in English over the summer. Among her many responsibilities, Lucy will be organizing our annual Dissertation Writers’ Retreat series and our weekly writing groups for graduate students.

Keep reading for upcoming workshops in support of effective writing pedagogy and other reminders of the many Writing Studio resources available to support you and your students this semester.

Undergraduate and Graduate Writing Consultant Staff 2023-2024

Teaching Writing Workshop Series

Join us at the Writing Studio for one of our upcoming faculty workshops on writing pedagogy.

Scaffolding Writing Across the Semester
Monday, 6 November | 3:00-4:30 p.m.

Participants will learn how to use backward design to scaffold writing projects and assignments throughout the semester. In preparation for Spring 2023, they will also have the opportunity to workshop syllabi for courses with writing components. Participants should bring a draft of a spring course syllabus or another syllabus they wish to redesign. Let us know you’re coming!

Incorporating Multimodal Composition
Tuesday, 5 December | 12-1:30 p.m.

Join us for a workshop focused on multimodal writing assignments across the disciplines. Multimodal assignments can center writing- and research-related learning goals while allowing students to use their voices as writers in unique ways and to reach wider audiences. Participants will examine different multimodal genres (e.g., podcasts, video essays, social media content, etc.) and brainstorm ways to develop or redevelop writing assignments. Let us know you’re coming!

Fall 2023 in-person workshops will be facilitated by Dr. Megan Minarich, Associate Director, Vanderbilt Writing Studio & Tutoring Services. Questions? Please email megan.l.minarich@vanderbilt.edu.

Fall Dissertation Writers’ Retreat (Oct. 19–20)

During fall break, Oct. 19th and 20th, the Writing Studio will host its annual Fall Dissertation Writers’ Retreat. Retreat participants will have ample time for focused writing with opportunities to set goals, attend optional daily workshops, and hold one-on-one writing consultations, all while building a community of support with fellow graduate students.

Graduate students and postdocs working on master’s theses and other significant writing projects are welcome to participate. Lunch will be provided.

For additional information and to register, visit the Dissertation Writers’ Retreat page. Interested participants should register by Friday, Oct. 6.

Bring the Writing Studio into Your Classroom

Faculty like you have already requested 29 workshops this semester, but we’d still love to come work with you and your students!

Request a Brief Introduction to the Writing Studio

To help your students feel more at ease talking with others about their works in progress, we recommend inviting one of our consultants to give a ten-minute presentation to your class with all the essential details about the Writing Studio.

Complete our In-Class Introduction to the Writing Studio form to request a visit.

Request an In-Class Writing Workshop

Consider inviting a writing consultant to your class to lead a workshop on different elements of academic writing. Consultants can lead workshops on topics such as organizing research papers, developing thesis statements, revision, etc.

Complete our In-Class Writing Workshop Request form to start the process.

Visit the Writing Studio’s Faculty page for additional information and resources available for instructors.

Writing Pedagogy Consultations

The Writing Studio’s Director, Associate Director, and Academic Support Coordinators are available to discuss writing pedagogy: syllabus construction and development, writing assignment design, resources for student writing support, and more.

To schedule an appointment, please contact our Office Administrator by emailing writing.studio@vanderbilt.edu.
