Each year during Vanderbilt’s Commencement ceremony, the university honors faculty for their years of service and bestows on them the title of emeritus or emerita faculty. With this title, the following benefits are currently available but are subject to change:
BENEFITS FOR EMERITAE/I OUTSIDE OF THE SCHOOL OF MEDICINE CLINICAL DEPARTMENTS
Vanderbilt University identification card: This can be obtained from the Vanderbilt Card Office (184 Sarratt Student Center). You must turn in your old ID card. Please contact the Card Office with any questions by email or phone (615-322-2273).
Continued Service:
- Attendance at general meetings of the college or school faculty from which retired. Contact the appropriate dean.
- Attendance at meetings of the Faculty Assembly. Information on fall and spring faculty assemblies can be found on the Faculty Senate website.
Library, Space, and Technology Resources:
- Access to most library digital resources and borrowing privileges. If you have questions about library access, please contact the specific library in your school (contact information here or submit your question to the main library through its Ask a Librarian portal).
- Office or laboratory space on an “as available” basis within the discretion of the dean. Contact the appropriate department chair or dean.
- An active VUnetID which grants access to VUnet and Eduroam wireless networks and access to the VU network, which includes shared drives/folders and library resources.
- Continuance of vanderbilt.edu email account. If you have questions about your VUnetID or email account, please contact VUIT by email or phone (615-343-9999).
Other Benefits:

- Eligible for membership in the Vanderbilt University Credit Union. For more information, please contact VUCU.
- Eligible for a parking permit. For more information, please contact the Office of Traffic and Parking by email or phone (615-322-2554).
- Eligible for faculty/staff discount program. For more information, please consult the HR discounts website.
- May audit one course per semester without charge, with the express permission of the instructor. Please reference the University Registrar’s website at https://registrar.vanderbilt.edu/ for information on how to process this request.
- Use of Benton Chapel for weddings for self and immediate family and for funerals for self and spouse. Use is based on availability. Contact the Events at Vanderbilt by email or phone (615-322-2448).
