We are delighted to announce that the American Statistical Association (ASA) has named Dr. Bob Johnson as a 2025 recipient of its Outstanding Chapter Service Award. His contributions to the Middle Tennessee chapter include serving as secretary since 2022, development of an online election ballot, and assistance in local arrangements for the traveling course.
This honor is the latest among the research, teaching, and service awards Dr. Johnson collected during his career, including Outstanding Departmental Teacher at Virginia Commonwealth University (2004 and 2012), and Outstanding Faculty Mentor (2018) and the Golden Apple Award for Excellence in Teaching (2023 at Vanderbilt. In fact, this is Dr. Johnson’s second ASA Chapter Service Award, having been recognized in 1996 for his service to the Virginia chapter, which included serving as its secretary/treasurer from 1988 to 2012. From 2015 to 2017, he was also vice chair of the ASA Council of Chapters Governing Board for region 1, district 2. Dr. Johnson retired from our department in June 2025, but his influence is certain to continue: the invited panels at this year’s Joint Statistical Meetings include “Building Strong ASA Student Chapters: Strategies for Growth, Inclusivity, and Maximizing Value.” Organized by Dr. Johnson, the panel includes COPSS Emerging Leader Lucy D’Agostino McGowan (PhD 2018) and Biostatistics Graduate Student Association president Alexis Fleming.
