Andrew Spieker elected to Society for Causal Inference Board

Congratulations to associate professor Andrew Spieker on his election to the board of the Society for Causal Inference (SCI). His methodological research focus is on causal inference methods, with special emphasis on sensitivity analysis, instrumental variable approaches, and longitudinal treatment regimes. Recognition for his methodological research in causal inference has included WNAR student paper honors for Most Outstanding Oral Presentation and Most Outstanding Paper) in 2015 and honorable mention for the American Causal Inference Conference (ACIC)’s Tom Ten Have Award in 2017. His contributions to the statistical community have included serving as Biometrics Section program chair for the 2022 Joint Statistical Meetings, chairing local arrangements for ENAR 2023, participating on SCI’s Professional Development Committee, and providing leadership and support for numerous other groups and projects. He was recently named co-editor-in-chief of Observational Studies and also serves as the book review editor for Biometrics.

In his SCI candidate statement, he said: “When asked about what draws me to causal inference, I have two responses: (1) I appreciate that the causal framework forces a researcher to be explicit about assumptions on the front end, and (2) the strong community we have, which is undoubtedly fostered by the interdisciplinary nature of our field,” and his priorities include fostering “an inclusive environment that acknowledges the heterogeneity of our field (by discipline, sector, and area of focus).”
