Marilyn Murphy’s oil paintings, drawings, and prints create curious situations from what appears to be everyday life often with a surprising twist. A Professor of Art at Vanderbilt University, her work has been shown in almost 400 exhibitions nationally and abroad in such places as the National Academy of Design, The Drawing Center in New York, and the Perc Tucker Gallery in Australia. A recipient of numerous awards and grants, she has curated more than 30 exhibitions and her work is in many public and private collections including the Kemper Collection, Huntsville Museum of Art, the Boston Museum School, Tennessee State Museum, and the Prudential and Bridgestone Collections. In 2004, the Frist Center for the Visual Arts presented a retrospective of the previous 25 years of her work entitled Suspended Animation. Recently, she has had solo exhibitions of her work at the Morris Museum of Art in Augusta, GA, Moreman Maloney Contemporary in Louisville, The Customs House Museum in Clarksville, TN and Cumberland Gallery in Nashville.  She had a two person exhibit at 21c Museum Hotel and was included in Cars in Art Invitationalat the Ohr-O’Keefe Museum in Biloxi, Ms. Professor Murphy’s work can be seen at the Carl Hammer Gallery in Chicago, Adler and Co. in San Francisco and Cumberland Gallery in Nashville.
