Faculty News: Professor Mel Ziegler, Progressive Architecture design award

Exciting news from the Sandhills Institute and Rushville, NE with Professor Mel Ziegler!  

The Grocery, a new innovative cultural center in development in Rushville, NE through the Sandhills Institute, a social practice artist residency and working ranch born from the studio practice and creative thought of Professor Mel Ziegler based just outside the town of Rushville.

Last winter/spring Professor Ziegler invited Professor Jeff Day (University of Nebraska – Lincoln) and his masters architecture class to help design renovations for the 101 grocery store on Main Street in Rushville, NE.

They recently received word that their plans won a national Progressive Architecture design award.  Nebraska hasn’t won one of these awards in over 20 years. There were over 200 applicants for only 10 awards. The

Professor Day, Professor Ziegler and Lisa Germany attended the award ceremony at the Museum of Modern Art in New York.  The Sandhills institute is very excited to share this with the Rushville Community.  Landscape designs for the two lots next to the building are coming this spring and construction on the grocery will start this summer.
