Appointments now open for annual inspections of lead-lined shields

Posted by on Friday, August 5, 2011 in Articles, August 2011.

Vanderbilt’s Department of Radiology is offering free annual inspections of lead-lined aprons, vest, skirts/kilts, thyroid collars, gonadal shields, gloves, and vinyl-type mobile shielding every Thursday from Sept. 29 to Nov. 10, from 3:30 to 9 p.m. Appointments should be made for this service by Sept. 15.

These inspections are mandatory; the Tennessee Department of Health and Environment, Radiological Health Division, and the Joint Commission on Accreditation of Healthcare Organizations requires that personal protective lead shielding be visually and fluoroscopy inspected each year, and newly purchased or refurbished lead shielding be inspected and documented before being placed into service.

During this period these inspections are free of charge. There will be a fee for lead shielding inspections (other than new lead or refurbished lead) not inspected during the September-November inspection period.

To schedule an appointment for your department or area, please contact David L. Martin at 343-0200, 835-5600 (pager), or at david.martin@vanderbilt.edu by Sept. 15.
