Quantum Science and Engineering

Materials, structures and processes characterized by ultrasmall size, ultrafast time scales and specific atomic and molecular states dominate the world of quantum science and engineering.  VINSE researchers are pushing the frontiers of quantum research using tools for nanoscale materials synthesis, modification, and nanostructuring, along with optical and laser spectroscopy and electron and scanning-probe microscopy.

In particular, VINSE researchers are creating nanoscale structures with optical properties desirable for quantum communication and sensing. Examples include nanoparticle assemblies that generate picosecond pulses of light at selected frequencies, nanoscale probes that tease out the properties of individual extracellular structures in biology, nanowires and nanoarrays with extraordinary heat conduction, and single photon emitters integrated on chip.
