Tennessee Highway Route Risk Assessments

Completed Research Projects

The Tennessee Department of Transportation (TDOT) contracted the Intermodal Freight Transportation Institute (IFTI) to perform route risk assessments for all Tennessee highways. This type of analysis was completed in the past using accident frequencies and rates as proxy measures for risk for all Interstate segments in half-mile increments.

This research expanded the geographic coverage of the risk assessments to include accidents occurring on NHS segments within the most recent 5 years of Tennessee Highway Patrol (THP) crash data. The crash data was linear-referenced to the Tennessee Department of Transportation’s (TDOT) highway layer using route and milepost data. Truck crashes were given special attention to determine if these occur on certain highway segments more often than the rest of the system.

Supplemental Notes: This research was sponsored by the U.S. Department of Transportation, University Transportation Centers Program (University of Memphis, Intermodal Freight Transportation Institute).
