G.L. Black

G.L. Black serves as Vice Provost for Student Affairs and Dean of Students, leading the University’s Student Affairs division in advancing a student-centered, integrated approach to student success, wellbeing, and community life in support of the University’s mission of teaching, research, and service. In this role, G.L. oversees Housing and Residential Experience; the Student Care Network; Student Accountability, Community Standards, and Academic Integrity; the Project Safe Center for Sexual Misconduct Prevention and Response; Student Engagement and Leadership; and Belonging and Communities.

 

G.L. earned his B.A. from the University of Florida, his J.D. from Harvard Law School, and his M.Ed. from Vanderbilt University’s Peabody College. He began his career as a litigator at Sullivan & Cromwell LLP in New York, where his practice focused on criminal defense and investigations, labor and employment, and antitrust matters. He later practiced at Shutts & Bowen LLP in Florida before joining Vanderbilt.

 

At Vanderbilt, G.L. has served as an Instructor of Law in the Legal Research and Writing Program at Vanderbilt Law School; Associate Director of Student Conduct and Academic Integrity; Assistant Dean of Students and Director of the Office of Student Accountability, Community Standards, and Academic Integrity; Associate Dean of Students for Community Standards and Student Support; and Assistant Provost and Deputy Dean of Students, prior to his appointment as Vice Provost.
