Arts and Science Undergraduate Semester Program

Spend a semester at Vanderbilt’s NYC campus combining academic study with hands-on learning. The College of Arts and Science offers a 15-credit program that blends experiential learning and academic coursework through a six-credit internship, three-credit internship practicum and two to three electives that explore New York City’s vibrant history, industry and culture. Students live on Vanderbilt’s NYC campus.

Arts, Culture and Entertainment

NYC’s museums, galleries, publishers, sports industries and other cultural institutions offer immersive arts and media study and access to strong professional networks.

Health, Medicine and Advocacy

NYC’s communities, hospitals and public health agencies offer real-world opportunities to study health and its societal impact in a range of settings, including for-profit hospitals, grassroots health organizations and public health institutions.

Leadership, Community and Social Engagement

Get involved in NYC’s nonprofits and civic institutions as you study leadership, service and social engagement. New York is home to organizations from local to global and ranging from neighborhood organizations to the United Nations.

Curriculum and Internship Breakdown

  • INDS-NYC 3990: Internship

    As part of Vanderbilt’s Arts and Science NYC program, students must participate in a six-credit academic internship in New York. Students will work for approximately 18 in-person hours/week with a direct supervisor. Students pursue internships with the support of Vanderbilt’s Career Center.

  • CAL-NYC 4000: Internship Practicum

    This required three-credit Internship Practicum gives students a framework for connecting their internship with the academic expertise gained in their coursework. Students will apply leadership theories and ethical understanding from their coursework to their internship experience and will pursue a project that leverages their insights and forges connections.

  • Electives in NYC
    Students will also take two 3-credit electives to round out their on-campus study. Elective courses include:
    • HIST-NYC 2745: City of Migration
      New York City as a driver and product of human mobility from the 19th century to the present. Intersections of immigrants, labor, race, and urban policy. Site visits in key neighborhoods, research in local archives, and engagement with community institutions. [3 credits] (US) (Core C, E)

    • HART-NYC  2805: Intro to Museum Studies
      Fundamentals of museum history; diversity, theory, current practices, and ethics related to collecting and collection management, interpretation, and display. Global perspectivewith emphasis on Euro-American museums. Museums of Art, Anthropology, History, and Science. Includes site visits to local museums. [3 credits] (P) (CORE B, E)

    • ECON-NYC 2300: Money and Banking
      A study of commercial banks and other intermediaries between savers and investors in the United States, including the government's role as money creator, lender, and regulator of private credit, and the effects of financial institutions on aggregate economic activity. Prerequisite: 1010 and 1020. [3 credits] (SBS) (CORE B)

    • MHS-NYC 2250 : What Is Health?
      Interdisciplinary exploration of how health is defined, contested, and pursued across social, cultural, and policy domains, including infrastructure, activism, hospitals and clinics, politics, media, and popular discourse. Uses the city as a laboratory to analyze health as a social good, a business, and a moral imperative. [3 credits] (SBS) (Core C, E)

ECON Majors must complete all MATH prerequisites before attending the Arts and Science Vanderbilt University–New York City Undergraduate Semester Program.
