This post outlines anticipated construction activity December 28 through January 9.

Please note that the university is closed through January 1 for Winter Break. This post was created with information available as of December 23. Weekly construction email updates will resume on January 11.

What to expect

  • Continued scaffolding and sidewalk bridge installation on the Vanderbilt Chelsea campus is expected to mobilize the entirety of 21st Street. Scaffolding installation work is primarily expected outside of Seabury; sidewalk bridges will continue to be placed along West 21st Street.
  • Street storage setup expected near Chapel and Dodge on West 21st Street from January 8 to January 13.
  • Abatement work within fully contained, empty buildings; abatement activity to be completed in accordance with applicable safety regulations. An environmental consultant will manage air monitoring, while a certified environmental vendor will do remediation of hazardous material.

You may notice

  • Ongoing worker presence
  • Minimal noise during working hours
  • Increased visual signs of construction on and around campus, including new scaffolding, street bridges, street storage, and construction fencing with plastic jersey barriers/yodocks

Construction activity timing

  • Weekdays, 7 a.m. – 4 p.m.; start time will be delayed to 8 a.m. on January 2.
  • No construction activity will take place on January 1; minimal activity is expected on December 31.

Access

  • Sidewalks remain open with minimal disruption.

Looking ahead

  • Beginning in January 2026, Vanderbilt in New York City will launch Coffee & Construction, a monthly informal update where neighbors and residents are invited to stop by, enjoy coffee, and connect directly with James Kellerhouse and the project management team. These sessions are designed to provide brief construction updates, answer questions, share upcoming milestones, and offer a space for open conversation about what’s ahead as work progresses on campus. We will announce the first date in the January 11 update.

Construction communications & the holidays

  • The next construction email update will be provided on January 11. Interim updates may be posted on the Campus Renovation Updates webpage in early January.
  • Time-sensitive notifications, when necessary, are shared via Anchor Alert for those enrolled in text communications.
