An experiential tagged course supporting the community
Since 2006, Professor Lori Catanzaro has taught a service-learning based Spanish course, focusing on healthcare and outreach to the Latino community in Nashville for pre-med and pre-health students.
Through SPAN 3830: Spanish, Health, and Society, Professor Catanzaro places students in a number of clinics around the community, including faith based clinics, nonprofit clinics, for-profit clinics clinics associated with medical schools in Nashville, and mobile clinics hosting pop-up events.
Students are required to perform at least 20 hours of community service work as interpreters or observing interpreters. Professor Catanzaro speaks to the impact this course has had on students, "I have witnessed firsthand impact of our students going forth as professionals and the ripple affect this has on the practices, and how they have been able to help patients not only around the country, but around the globe."
