NASHVILLE, Tenn. - With the 2003 dual match season underway for college tennis, the Intercollegiate Tennis Association released its Omni Hotels Collegiate Individual Rankings on Monday afternoon. Both the Vanderbilt men’s and women’s squads were well represented in their respective polls.

On the women’s side, senior Sarah Riske (McMurray, Pa.) and junior Kelly Schmandt were both recognized by the ITA. Riske earned a ranking of No. 32, while Schmandt comes in at No. 121. The two dealt with injury and illness and different times during the fall, which effected their play; however, both are healthy for the start of the dual season. The two helped the Commodores kick off the 2003 season with two dual match victories, which came on Sunday against Michigan State and Louisville. Riske and Schmandt both won both their singles and doubles matches against the Spartans and Cardinals.

Riske and junior Aleke Tsoubanos (Chesterfield, Mo.) enter the 2003 season with a national ranking of No. 2. The only team that stands between them and the No. 1 ranking is Tulane’s Julie Smekodub and Jenny Kuhn. Riske and Tsoubanos were victorious at the Riviera/ITA All-American Championships in early October, while Smekodub and Kuhn won the ITA National Indoors.

On the men’s side, juniors Bobby Reynolds (Acworth, Ga.), Chad Harris (Aurora, Colo.) and sophomore Matt Lockin (Lilburn, Ga.) are earned top 125 rankings. An All-America in 2002, Reynolds returns to Vanderbilt with high expectations, and this is evident by the No. 8 national ranking he received. The junior is coming off an exceptional fall season, which he went 13-5 and defeated 11 players ranked by the ITA. Reynolds also earned a doubles ranking of No. 27 with partner Lewie Smith (Memphis, Tenn.). The two did not play a lot of matches together during the fall, which effected their rankings. During the ITA All-American Championship in early October, the two lost to Stanford’s Scott Lipsky and David Martin, 9-8, who are now ranked No. 3 nationally.

Harris, who comes into the spring season ranked No. 14, also had an outstanding fall going 13-5. His biggest victory during the fall came against Middle Tennessee State’s Daniel Klemetz, who was ranked No. 1 nationally at the time and who enters the spring at the No. 3 spot. Lockin, a transfer from the University of Michigan, will be a strong addition to Flach’s squad. He earned a No. 99 ranking after going 7-4 during the fall. He will see the majority of his singles action at the No. 3 position for the Commodores.
