Women’s Soccer Earns 1-1 Tie Against Louisiana State 10/25/02

BATON ROUGE, La. - The Vanderbilt women’s soccer team picked up its second-consecutive tie, as it battled with SEC Western Division foe Louisiana State to a 1-1 draw. Both teams entered the evening needing a victory to keep its slim hopes alive fo r making the SEC Touranment, but now both head into Sunday’s games needing a win and a lot of help to still qualify. With the tie, Vanderbilt moves to 4-8-2 overall and 2-4-2 in the SEC, while LSU now stands at 10-4-2 and 2-3-2 in the SEC.

In an evenly matched game throughout, the Fighting Tigers jumped on the board first when forward Artie Brown scored in the 38th minute following an assist from Jenn deHay. For Brown, it was her fifth goal of the season. With Brown’s goal, LSU took a 1-0 lead into halftime despite being outshot 10-5 in the first half.

The Commodores continued to struggle to find the back of the net until finally ending the drought in the 85th minute. With time running out, forward Lizzy Johnson scored following a blast from around 45 yards, which went by LSU goalkeeper Robyn DesOrmeaux. Johnson’s goal was the second of the season for her, and the fifth of her career.

Johnson’s goal sent the game to sudden-death overtime; however, neither team was able to score during the extra 20 minutes of action. Both teams finished the game with 16 shots apiece, while the Commodores edged out the Fighting Tigers in corner kicks by a margin of 7-5.
Vanderbilt goalkeeper Esther Thompson finished with five saves on the night, while DesOrmeaux had four for LSU.

The Commodores close out the SEC regular season portion of their schedule at 1 p.m. (CST) Sunday against Arkansas at the Lady ’Back Complex in Fayetteville, Ark. LSU will take on Kentucky at 1 p.m. Sunday at the LSU Soccer Complex.
