Commodores Move to 2-0 in Italy 8/22/02
VENICE, Italy – Vanderbilt’s women’s basketball
team moved to 2-0 on its 10-day Italian excursion, as the
Commodores defeated Seiezone Lombarda, 103-58. The Commodores
are scheduled to conclude their playing portion of the trip
Thursday evening before returning to Nashville on Friday.
Senior Chantelle Anderson followed-up her 28
point, 10 rebound performance last Sunday with a 33 point,
10 rebound performance on Wednesday. Anderson was unstoppable
from the floor, as she shot 16-for-18 (.889).
Three other Commodores chipped in with double-figure
outputs. Junior Jenni Benningfield turned in 15 points, while
junior Hillary Hager and sophomore Abi Ramsey had 12 and 11
points, respectively.
“Offensively, we executed the break and ran
our lanes better,” head coach Melanie Balcomb said. “We did
a better job of spreading the floor and that opened Chantelle
up. Defensively, we worked a lot on the match-up zone and
it helped. We (the coaches) really got on them (the team)
in the second half because we were getting beat off the dribble,
and that’s why we were in foul trouble.”
Overall statistics from Seiezone Lombarda game
- 25 team fouls
- 42-for-69 from the floor
- 15-for-18 from the free throw line
- 4-for-17 from three-point range
