Men's Tennis Concludes Stint at MTSU Invitational 9/22/02
Lockin Finishes Runner-Up in Flight A1 Singles
MURFREESBORO, Tenn. - Several members of the Vanderbilt
men's tennis concluded action at the 15th Annual Middle Tennessee
State Fall Invitational on Sunday afternoon at the Buck Bouldin
Tennis Center.
Sophomore Matthew Lockin made it to the finals
of the Flight A1 Singles where he fell to Gilles Lagardere
of Ouachita Baptist in three sets, 6-2, 3-6, 6-1. Prior
to the finals, he defeated Kirk Jackson of MTSU in straight-sets
6-3, 7-5 (quarterfinals) and Jhonny Berrido of Louisville
in three sets, 6-2, 3-6, 6-1. Sophomore Scott Brown
also competed in the same draw with Lockin; however, he lost
to Rahim Esmail of Kentucky in the quarterfinals, 6-2, 7-6.
Finally, in Flight B Singles, junior Jens Pilgram-Larsen was
defeated in three gruelling sets by Vedron Sirola of Jacksonville
State, 6-7, 6-4, 10-2 (third-set tiebreaker).
The men's team returns to action on Friday, September
28, at the Kentucky Wildcats Invitational in Lexington, Ky.
The tournament runs through Sunday, September 30.

Mens Tennis Competes On Day One Of
MTSU Invitational 9/20/02
Commodores Pick Up Seven Wins On First Day Of Competition
MURFREESBORO, Tenn. - Several members of the Vanderbilt mens
tennis team kicked off their 2002-03 season on Friday afternoon
at the 15th Annual Middle Tennessee State Fall Invitational
at the Buck Bouldin Tennis Center. Of the nine singles matches
Vanderbilt players competed in, the Commodores picked up seven
wins.
In the Ranked Flight round-robin tournament, junior Chad Harris
fell to No. 10-ranked Daniel Klemetz of MTSU 6-3, 6-2; however,
the No. 38-ranked player in the country rebounded with a 6-3,
7-5 victory over Ole Miss Paul Ciorascu. Harris will
take on No. 53-ranked Cody Conley of Louisville 10:30 a.m.
Saturday.
Sophomores Scott Brown and Matthew Lockin both advanced to
the quarterfinals of the Flight A1 Singles, which will played
Saturday morning at 8:30 and 9:30 a.m. Brown defeated Marten
Tamla of Tennessee-Martin in straight-set 6-4, 6-4, and later
on in the afternoon defeated Brandon Allan of MTSU, 6-2, 6-4.
Brown will have a difficult match on Saturday when he takes
on Rahim Esmail of Kentucky at 8:30 a.m. After receiving a
bye in the first round, Lockin defeated Andre Edwall
of Ouachita Baptists, 6-3, 6-3. Lockin goes up against Kirk
Jackson of MTSU at 9:30 a.m. Junior Zach Dailey went 1-1 on
the afternoon in Flight A1, as he defeated Danny Norman of
Lipscomb 6-0, 6-4, but then fell to Jhonny Berrido of Louisville
in straight-sets, 6-3, 6-2.
In Flight B Singles, junior Jens Pilgram-Larsen easily defeated
his two opponents. In his first round match, he defeated Ryan
Turham of Western Kentucky 6-3, 6-2, and then followed that
win up with a 6-2, 6-2 victory over Will Chappell of Tennesse
Tech. Larsen will take on Vedron Sirola of Jacksonville State
at 10 a.m. Saturday.
