Vanderbilt
at the NCAAs
In 1999, the Commodores made their NCAA Tournament
debut when they received the No. 2 seed for the NCAA Regional Tournament at
Champaign, Ill. Opening against third-seeded Michigan, Vanderbilt won in its
NCAA debut as Peter Blach and Danny Tym both pulled out three-set matches to
secure the victory. The next day, Vanderbilt battled the homestanding Fighting
Illini hard but fell to the nation’s No. 7 ranked team, 4-2. VU was leading
the one match that was suspended.Vanderbilt also participated in an NCAA qualifying
tournament in 1995, losing to Kentucky, 4-2 in Lexington, but the NCAA does
not include it on its all-time tournament records.

In
2001, the Commodores returned to the NCAA Tournament when they received
a No. 33-48 seed for the NCAA Tournament and traveled to the regional in College
Station, Tex. Opening against 17-32 seeded Arizona State, Vanderbilt upset the
Sun Devils 4-1. The next day, Vanderbilt battled the host Aggies of Texas A&M
but fell to the nation’s No. 4 ranked team, 4-0.
