Snedeker Qualifies for Final Match at U.S. Public
Links Championship 7/18/03
NASHVILLE,
Tenn. - In Friday's clash between a former Commodore and
a future Commodore, Brandt Snedeker defeated Luke List,
2-up, to advance to Saturday's final match at the 2003 U.S.
Public Links Championship. The U.S. Public Links Championship
is being played at Blue Heron Pines' East Course (par 71,
7,127 yards) in Galloway Township, N.J.
In a match for the ages, recent Vanderbilt graduate Snedeker
claimed the semifinal victory over List (Ringgold, Ga.),
who will be attending Vanderbilt in the fall.
The match, in which No. 2 seed Snedeker never trailed,
was all-square after three holes. Snedeker then won four
of the next five holes to take a 4-up advantage after eight
holes. No. 11 seed List rebounded with a par on the ninth
hole to shrink Snedeker's lead to just 3-up.
The back nine would turn out to be a true demonstration
of match play. Beginning on the 10th hole, List birdied
seven straight holes, but still found himself trailing Snedeker
by one hole. After surrendering a hole on the 10th green,
Snedeker matched Luke at No. 11 and then beat his birdie
with an eagle at No. 12.
Still with a 3-up lead after 13 holes, Snedeker dropped
holes at No. 14 and No. 16 to find himself with just a 1-up
advantage heading to the 17th tee. On No. 17, List posted
a bogey four, while Snedeker carded a par and claimed the
semifinal match.
In the morning quarterfinal, Snedeker defeated No. 7 seed
Brady Stockton (San Ramon, Calif.), 1-up. In this match,
Snedeker was one hole down or all-square until the 16th
hole. The Nashville native recorded a birdie on No. 16 to
go 1-up and then matched pars with Stockton on the final
two holes to win.
Snedeker will now face No. 9 seed and Oklahoma State junior
Dayton Rose (Stillwater, Okla.), who defeated the No. 44
seed Chris Stroud (Groves,
Texas) and No. 1 seed Jeffrey Overton (Evansville, Ind.)
Friday. Snedeker and Rose tee off in the 36-hole championship
match Saturday at 6:30 a.m. Central.
The U.S. Amateur Public Links Championship, for bona fide
public course players, is one of 13 national championships
conducted annually by the United States Golf Association,
10 of which are strictly for amateurs.
