Commodore Cross Country Kicks Off Season at Belmont Opener 9/6/02

NASHVILLE, Tenn. — The Belmont Opener men’s and women’s cross country meet will he held Friday at Percy Warner Park in Nashville. The women’s race, which beings at 5:30 p.m., will be run on a 2-mile course. The men’s 5K race follows at 6 p.m.

With the addition of 10 freshman, the women look to only improve on an impressive fifth place finish at last year’s SEC Championship. Ryan Williams and Eric Walle take on a strong leadership role for a men’s team that is young, but full of promising runners.

Other participants in the Belmont Opener include Alabama, UAB (women only), Austin Peay, Belmont, Bevil State Community College, Evansville, Lipscomb, North Alabama, Southern Indiana, Tennessee State and Western Kentucky.

At last year’s Belmont Opener, the Vanderbilt men came in fourth, while the Commodore women finished third. Eric Walle placed ninth with a time of 16:22 to lead the men’s squad and Jessica Holt finished seventh with a time of 11:39 to pace the women’s team.
