Evanston,
Illinois - The tenth-ranked Vanderbilt Commodores (10-5) completed
their undefeated league season Saturday by defeating the Northwestern
Wildcats (5-10) by a score of 13-7 in American Lacrosse Conference
action. Senior Liz Drennan and junior Jeannie Crawley each
notched six points on the day to give Vanderbilt its fourth
10-win season in the program's seven-year history.
Only
six goals were scored in the first half of the match, as the
teams became acquainted. The Commodores controlled much of
the action, but could not seem to find their shooting touch.
Vanderbilt had 21 shots in the first period, but only scored
four times. Wildcat goalkeeper Ashley Gersuk made eight saves
in the first 30 minutes, keeping Northwestern within two goals
of Vanderbilt at halftime.
The
teams remained close in the second half until a 5-0 Vanderbilt
run took control of the game. Three times in the half, Vanderbilt
scored consecutive goals less than a minute apart. The duo
of Drennan and Crawley combined for six goals and five assists
in the half, helping the Commodores take the 13-7 victory.
Freshman
goalkeeper Ashley Bastinelli saved 56 percents of the shots
she faced before sophomore Liz Exline saw action, shutting
out the Wildcats in the final three minutes.
On
attack, Drennan scored a pair of goals and dished out four
assists, tying her for the Vanderbilt single-season record
with 27 assists this year. Jeannie Crawley scored four goals
and had two assists, while sophomore Mary McCeney and Jess
Roguski each added a pair of goals.
"Winning
today's game and going undefeated in our conference was a
great way to cap off the best season in our history,"
said head coach Cathy Swezey. "I am proud of the character
our team displayed all year. Our three seniors have had great
careers here - I just hope today was not their last day."
This
match marked the final contest of the 2002 regular season
for the Commodores, who now await the 2002 Division I Women's
Lacrosse Championship Selection Show on Sunday night.
