#8 Commodores Falls to #4 Tarheels 4/12/02
Chapel Hill, NC -- The eighth ranked Vanderbilt Commodores
(7-3) dropped a 14-6 decision to #4 North Carolina (10-2)
Friday night in NCAA women's lacrosse action.
The Tarheels began each half with 4-0 runs that the Commodores
could not recover from. The Commodores were outscored 7-2
in the first half, with sophomore Jess Roguski scoring both
of the Commodores' goals. Three players for the Tarheels each
scored a pair of goals in the half.
In the second half, the Commodores doubled their offensive
output, but could not stop the potent Tarheel attack. Senior
Liz Drennan, juniors Jeannie Crawley and Tara Schmucker, and
sophomore Kelly Devlin each scored for Vanderbilt.
For the Tarheels, Christine McPike scored four goals, with
Lindsey Stone adding a hat-trick. The Commodores outshot UNC
23-22, but could not find the back of the net. Freshman goalkeeper
Ashley Bastinelli made seven saves for Vanderbilt, while two
Tarheel keepers combined for seven saves.
Sophomore Michelle Allen had five ground balls and three
caused turnovers, while senior Megan Lewis added four ground
balls and two caused turnovers.
The Commodores travel to Davidson, North Carolina Sunday.
The Wildcats, an American Lacrosse Conference opponent, are
5-7, 0-1 in the league.
