Sample Questions for Discussions with Faculty and Peer Teaching Mentors

When meeting with faculty and peer mentors, you can use these questions to frame your discussions and/or develop your own questions.

  1. General information about the mentoring experience.

    1. Mentor's name:
    2. Mentor's status: Faculty, Graduate Student, Professional Student, Postdoc, or Other
    3. Date and time observed mentor's teaching:
    4. Course observed:
    5. Level of students: Freshman/sophomores, Junior/seniors, or Graduate/Professional students


  2. Questions about the mentor's teaching.

    1. How do you approach your subject as you prepare to teach?
    2. Do you try to identify more with your discipline/material or your students?
    3. How do you to try to motivate students during the class period/over the semester?
    4. How do you prepare before each lecture/discussion/help session?
    5. What different methods or approaches do you employ to present material from different angles or points of reference?
    6. How do you encourage critical thinking in your students?
    7. What ways of manipulating physical space in the classroom do you find effective?
    8. What have been your best (and/or worst) teaching experiences? Why?
    9. Were there teachers who impacted you (for better or worse) and how have you incorporated what you learned from them into your own teaching?
    10. What kinds of technologies do you find effective in teaching?
    11. How might new technologies change teaching over the next 5 years?
